E.ON EnergyNeighbourhoods: trainings for climate coordinators successfully completed

The latest IPCC report issued by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change on 8 October 2018 has generated hot debates and conversations worldwide. Along with other green organisations, GreenDependent Institute also joined the issue of a Hungarian press release about the report. The IPCC special report found that ’it is our global interest to limit global warming to 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels as adopted in the Paris Agreement. As temperature has risen 1°C already, we need to act immediately. If global emissions of greenhouse gases continue to rise in the actual scale, we will pass the threshold of 1.5°C within two decades’. According to the United Nations, consequences of climate change will be irreversible and catastrophic unless effective actions are taken within the next 12 years.

Therefore overall acts are indispensable. Related to the EnergyNeighbourhoods programme running for the 7th time this year, GreenDependent encourages everyone to start the change by revising their actual energy usage. Once we get a clear picture of our own energy consumption, we can start to change our everyday habits and routines related to energy. The EnergyNeighbourhoods programme can help in this effort with various tools, tips and motivation (e.g. valuable prizes). The programme includes the organisation of small communities as it proved to be easier to make long-term changes together.

At the beginning of the EnergyNeighbourhoods Programme, two trainings were organised in Budapest for climate coordinators; the first one on 27th October and the second one on 10th November. Actually, climate coordinators are energy masters who volunteered to lead a 5-10 member small family/community group.

During the trainings, climate coordinators were provided with useful information and tips to prepare for the competition. In addition, they had a chance to meet each other and ask questions personally. The presenters from GreenDependent talked about the high importance of changing our everyday habits related to energy use, without reducing the quality of life. They emphasized that the programme was designed to show families, through comprehensive awareness-raising about climate and energy use, how simple changes in behavior can result in huge savings of both energy and money. Information was shared about how climate coordinators can effectively organise and support their own Energy Neighbourhood, how to communicate with people having different personalities and motivations. In addition, former climate coordinators shared their experiences with the new ones, moreover they talked about the benefits of participating in this programme.

In this season many enthusiastic and environmentally aware people applied for participating the EnergyNeighbourhoods Programme. Their motivation comes from making environmental and energy use awareness widespread among their families, friends or colleges. This year most of the applicants are new to this programme. As usually, there are some ’old’, experienced climate coordinators who are still enthusiastic about organising a new community.

At both trainings there was an open and high-spirited atmosphere, with active participation of climate coordinators. Szatyorcatering supplied us with delicious food made from seasonal, local and responsible ingredients.

We hope that climate coordinators of this season also found the trainings useful and now they all have the motivation and enthusiasm to successfully organise their team and get prepared for the competition.
