The mayor and the cleaning lady joined forces against climate change − Public buildings have been awarded for their energy saving efforts

The closing and award ceremony for the year-long energy saving campaign called save@work was held on 25 May 2017 in Budapest. The EU funded campaign ran between 1 March 2016 and 28 February 2017, with 19 public buildings and over 2000 employees participating from Hungary. Its most important aim was to reduce the participating buildings' overall energy consumption by changing the employees' everyday practices and behaviour. The national partner was GreenDependent Institute, which provided the expertise and materials, as well as coordinated and organised the Hungarian events.

E.ON EnergyNeighbourhoods programme - after the 2. training for the energy masters

In our residential energy saving programme called E.ON EnergyNeighbourhoods, small communities (of families, friends, colleagues, etc.) compete for saving the largest amount of energy only through changing their behaviour and everyday consumption patterns. Each group is supported by a volunteer adult coordinator called „energy master” and, if possible, by a young „energy hunter”. Energy masters and hunters support activities of their group, organise meetings and motivate their members.

GreenDependent projects in UNEP report on fostering and communicating sustainable lifestyles

The EnergyNeighbourhoods programme, along with one of GreenDependent's previous programmes, Small Footprint, included in UNEP (United Nations Environmental Program) report published at the end of 2016. The report - Fostering and Communicating Sustainable Lifestyles: Principles and Emerging Practices - furthers understanding of sustainable lifestyles to accelerate their widespread adoption. It contains 16 international good practice examples, of which Hungary is the only country representing Eastern-Europe. Case studies are included from The Netherlands, the UK, the US, China, Egypt, Costa Rica, Vietnam, Myanmar, but the report also introduces global initiatives and campaigns.

Save@work - The detailed English report on the results of the pre-campaign survey is ready

Public buildings take part in the save@work campaign, which aims at reducing the buildings' overall energy consumption by changing the employees' everyday practices and behaviour. To be able to measure the impact of the campaign, we conduct surveys both at the beginning and at the end of the year-long competition. The so-called pre-campaign survey was filled in by around 20 % of all employees within the participating buildings of the nine EU countries involved in the project.

ENERGISE: European Network for Research, Good Practice and Innovation for Sustainable Energy

What is ENERGISE?

ENERGISE is an innovative pan-European research initiative to achieve a greater scientific understanding of the social and cultural influences on energy consumption. Funded under the EU Horizon 2020 programme for three years (2016-2019), ENERGISE develops, tests and assesses options for a bottom-up transformation of energy use in households and communities across Europe.

Energy saving and community building: the second half of the energy saving competition for public buildings has started

19 Hungarian public buildings with over 2000 employees participate in the EU project, called save@work. There was a midterm event on 13 October in Budapest related to project, to which all the Hungarian save@work Energy Teams were invited. The primary aim of the event was to boost the enthusiasm of save@work participants after the summer holidays and beyond the midterm of the competition.

5th International Degrowth Conference in Budapest

The 5th International Degrowth Conference, co-organized by GreenDependent, will take place in Budapest from 30 August to 3 September 2016.

For the first time, and in parallel to the 5th International Degrowth Conference, an open festival “Budapest Degrowth Week” will feature practical workshops, panel sessions and participatory discussions, as well as concerts, artistic performances and interactive tours throughout the city.

All Degrowth Week programmes are open to the public.
