TreeDependent and other carbon offsetting and compensation methods

In what way does our carbon footprint calculation and compensation method, used in the scope of the 'TreeDependent - responsible events, responsible travel' programme and elaborated specifically for events, differ from other carbon offsetting and compensation methods?

As there is a growing number of organisations offering services in the area of carbon compensation, it is necessary to clarify why and in what way GreenDependent's method differs from other carbon offsetting and compensation methods. The differences are listed below:

1. GreenDependent Association and Institute developed a unique methodology for their own account to calculate and compensate for the carbon footprint of their events related to sustainability and climate change. The methodology was developed 10 years ago in order to raise carbon awareness of GreenDependent's different programs such as Large Family - Small Footprint, Small Footprint and Gödöllő Climate Club. In the beginning the carbon calculator designed by Energiaklub was used for the calculation. Later on we cooperated with Energiaklub in updating and improving the calculator. Therefore, the method has been tested and developed for 10 years now. We consider especially important to involve participants of our events and programs in the compensation process, if they are open to that.

2. GreenDependent developed a unique calculation and compensation method which is introduced HERE.

3. In line with the information under item 1, we deem highly important the awareness raising and sensitising impact resulting from the services of the TreeDependent programme. Therefore, we strongly suggest to our partners to communicate to their partners and their events' participants about their green event organising efforts as well as the carbon footprint calculation and reduction.

4. It is also important that besides achieving carbon neutrality of an event, the organisors and hosts should take actual steps to reduce their carbon footprint and other environmental impacts. In addition to compensating adverse environmmental impacts it is also necessary to actively reduce those impacts.

5.Compensation is realized in Hungary, for the time being, by planting exclusively native fruit trees.

6. By planting native fruit trees we also actively facilitate the conservation of biodiversity in the scope of the compensation process.

7. Trees are planted in the gardens of schools and other non-profit organisations with social benefits.

8. Besides the compensation itself, there are other, equally important positive impacts of planting. This means that we also contribute to other sustainability aims as follows:

  • conservation of biodiversity
  • education and awareness raising (related to biodiversity, climate emergency, food production etc.)
  • implementation of local food production potentials
  • community building
  • establishment and building of partnerships among participants of the programme (e.g. between clients of the service and schools/non-profit and social initiatives)
  • job creation (e.g. fruit production by involving disadvantaged workers)

9. At the end of the planting process we draw up a report with photos about the planting. This way the clients will actually know where and by whom the trees would be planted. The clients have a chance to get involved in the planning, which can facilitate and strengthen partnerships and communities.
