Despite the coronavirus, households have become more green

GreenDependent Institute organized its energy-saving competition, E.ON EnergyNeighbourhoods, for the eighth time (for the sixth year with the support of E.ON). The half-year long “household greening” program was also affected by the epidemic caused by the coronavirus, as the participating families, unlike before, were stuck in their homes almost all day, which made saving energy more difficult.

During the eight years, more than 200 communities have entered the program, which means that about 1070 households have participated in EnergyNeighbourhoods. Also, almost 230 volunteer climate-coordinators have been trained to lead the energy communities. This season, 150 households with more than 500 participants joined the program.

Because of this year’s different circumstances caused by the pandemic, like more home office, home school, and also, home leisure time, opportunities for saving were influenced. Despite this fact, the three best communities finished the competition having reduced their energy consumption by 20,07%; 15,03%; and 16,7%.

The pandemic situation affected not just the savings, but the creative tasks too. The participants had different experiences in connection with this year’s alternative fasting called kiloWatt-Lent. For example, some families needed to use their washing machine less, because they were staying home; but some of them needed to use it more to disinfect their clothes. While some families started to use the oven more to bake their own bread, some other families used it less, because they preferred to cook on a campfire.

The creativity of the participants was also manifested in the “Collection of green pandemic stories”, which was part of the third task of the program. Gardens have never been more green and organized than they have been this spring; and also, those who are living in flats got some balcony-gardening experience. Offline home activities were diverse too, from marathon puzzling, through dollhouse making to organizing drawing competitions.

The program’s regular closing award ceremony won’t be held in June this year, but just like the savings, the celebration won’t be cancelled. In September, to close this year's competition and also to open the new season, a ceremony will be held where communities will be able to meet, and, of course, where prizes will be handed over.
